The SS Gairloch, once a part of the Northern Steamship Company's fleet that sailed between Onehunga, New Plymouth, Whanganui, and Nelson, met its fate on the night of 5 January 1903. The ship ran aground on Timaru Reef during a storm, though fortunately, no lives were lost. Today, the shipwreck offers a glimpse into the past, with the rusted iron skeleton of its bow protruding from the water. A short wade into the sea reveals the ship’s engine remnants and bottom plates, evocative of whale bones emerging from the depths.
