New Zealand Pet Friendly Holidays

Planning the ultimate New Zealand road trip holiday and can’t bear the thought of leaving your furry friend behind? Apollo has your back! We allow pets on a wide variety of Apollo, Cheapa Campa and Hippie Campers. If you’re travelling New Zealand by road, there is no reason to leave your pet behind.

If you would like to bring your four-legged pal with you on your trip, be sure to read all of your responsibilities below:

Booking

When booking your rental campervan, you need to contact our reservation team and notify the team you will be bringing your dog as not all vehicles are pet friendly. If you have already booked through a third party and planning on bringing your pet, make sure to contact us directly to confirm whether your chosen rental campervan is pet friendly. Please note, additional charges may apply.

Dogs holidaying with Apollo, must be registered. You may need to present proof of registration when you are completing your booking or when picking up your rental vehicle at the branch.

Please call our reservations team on 0800 113 131 to ensure our branch is suitable to bring your dog when picking up or dropping off your rental vehicle. We recommend picking up your rental motorhome prior to bringing your pet to the branch as on some busy days, your pet may have to wait outside the branch for over an hour. Your pet will need to be attended by the owner at all times while at the branch.

There is a pet cleaning fee of $250 if picking up on or before 31 March 2024. Picking up on or after 1 April 2024 is a pet cleaning fee of $299. Pet cleaning fee applicable for the additional cleaning required to satisfy the people unlucky enough not to be travelling with their fur babies. If the rental motorhome requires more cleaning as a result of not looking after your pet and campervan well enough, there may be an additional charge applicable.

If you are planning on staying at campsites throughout your holiday, ensure the camping sites are pet friendly.

Pick up & Drop off

As mentioned, we do not recommend bringing your dog to the branch for your pet’s comfort. However if you need to, please confirm with reservations prior this is ok and please do not bring dogs into the branch at any time.

Dogs must be on a leash at all times while at the branch and must be attended to by someone over the age of 16. If you’re travelling solo, please organise to pick up your pet after you have picked up your rental vehicle.

We do not allow any dangerous or threatening dogs on the premises. Animals that are not clean, appear vicious or likely to annoy, threaten or inconvenience other customers or staff will not be allowed on the premises and may be asked to leave.

Please dispose of any droppings immediately. Branches don’t have bags or bins onsite so make sure to bring your own.

Always remember that you are responsible for your pet at all times.

During Your Road Trip

Please refer to the rules applicable in the country you are travelling in.

When booking campsites for your holiday, make sure they allow dogs.

We don’t provide any restraints or comfort items for your pet. You need to bring your own harnesses, restraints, crates, bowls, etc.

It is important to properly restrain your dog whilst travelling. Pets are not allowed to move around inside the vehicle as this can be very distracting to the driver. Dogs must not be in the driver’s cabin while driving.

Please don’t leave pets unattended in the vehicle.

No wet dogs in the rental vehicles please - for their enjoyment and yours.

Any droppings are the dog owners responsibility and need to be properly disposed of. We don’t supply plastic bags or bins.

Any damage to the vehicle caused by the dog as a result of negligence if your responsibility and this is not covered under your liability reduction option.

Top Tips For Travelling With A Pet

1. Pack bedding for your doggo so they also feel like they’re also traveling in a home away from home (and don’t sleep on yours!)

2. No matter how well trained your pooch is, most camping sites and public spaces require dogs to be walked on a lead at all times.

3. Bring all the poo bags. No one likes to be caught short.

4. Hot cars make and dogs do not mise, don’t leave dogs unattended inside the campervan while you go wandering.

5. Think mini bar and keep water and kibble on demand. Depending on where you are travelling to, there may not be a pet store to stock up on your dogs favourite treats.
