Darwin to Litchfield National Park 5 Day Road Trip

Day 1: Darwin to Batchelor

Distance: ~100 kms
Travel time: ~1.5 hours

After collecting your Apollo campervan in Darwin, ease into your Litchfield road trip with a gentle first day south toward Batchelor. This is not a day for racing ahead. Instead, it is about settling into the rhythm of Top End travel, trading city streets for open skies, paperbark wetlands, and pockets of monsoon forest. Batchelor makes an excellent first overnight stop because it sits close to the park while still offering a relaxed small-town base and easy access for a 2WD campervan.

Where to stop between Darwin and Batchelor

Your first worthwhile stop is George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens if you have time before leaving the city. The gardens are a peaceful place to stretch your legs among shady walking paths, tropical plantings, and lush lawns, and they offer a lovely soft introduction to the landscapes you will encounter further south. Once on the road, make Berry Springs Nature Park your main stop of the day. Just south of Darwin, it is one of those classic Top End picnic spots where clear natural pools, tropical greenery, and shaded barbecue areas invite you to slow down immediately. Pack a relaxed lunch, take a swim if conditions allow, and enjoy that first proper feeling of being away.

As you continue toward Batchelor, the scenery begins to shift into the broad, sunlit landscapes that define this part of the Northern Territory road trip experience. It is a short driving day, which means there is no pressure to hurry. Pull over where safe, take in the wide horizons, and let the trip unfold at an easy pace.

Things to do in Batchelor

Batchelor is the kind of place that works best when you keep expectations simple. This small township is often seen as the gateway to Litchfield National Park, but it is also a pleasant place to unwind for the evening. Spend the afternoon settling into your site, enjoying a slow dinner in the campervan, and planning the next few days in the park. If you would like an early taste of the area’s history and culture, use Batchelor as your staging point for a quiet evening and an early start into the national park the next morning. It suits couples looking for a laid-back beginning rather than a packed first day.

Where to stay in Batchelor

Litchfield Tourist Park is a great fit for an Apollo 2WD campervan, with powered sites and a convenient location near Batchelor. It is an easy overnight base before heading deeper into the park. Another practical option is Batchelor Holiday Park, which also caters well to campervan travellers wanting a comfortable first night close to Litchfield.

Day 2: Batchelor to Wangi Falls

Distance: ~95 kms
Travel time: ~2 hours

Today is where the classic darwin to Litchfield experience really begins. From Batchelor, drive into Litchfield National Park and spend the day discovering some of its most distinctive sights before arriving at one of its best-known waterfall precincts. With short distances between stops and sealed access to key attractions, it is a rewarding and easy day for a campervan road trip.

Where to stop between Batchelor and Wangi Falls

Start with the Magnetic Termite Mounds, one of the park’s most fascinating natural curiosities. Viewed from the boardwalk, these tall, thin termite mounds stand like a field of stone markers, all aligned north to south to help regulate temperature. It is a memorable stop not only for the unusual shapes themselves, but also for what they reveal about adaptation and life in the Top End environment.

From there, continue to the Bamboo Creek Tin Mine. This self-guided historic site adds a different dimension to your Litchfield national park visit, showing that the area is not only about waterfalls and swimming holes. Old ruins, processing equipment, and remnants of the mining operation offer a glimpse into the region’s early industrial history. It is an atmospheric place to wander for a while, especially if you enjoy stops that add depth and story to a road trip.

Before reaching Wangi Falls, you can also pause for scenic pullovers and quieter moments in the park. One of the pleasures of this Litchfield itinerary is that there is time to stop often without throwing the day off schedule.

Things to do in Wangi Falls

Wangi Falls is one of the icons of any northern territory road trip through the Top End, and it more than earns its reputation. Twin waterfalls tumble into a large plunge pool framed by rugged escarpment and tropical forest, creating a dramatic but inviting setting. The picnic area here is spacious and well set up, so this is the perfect place for a long lunch under the trees. Depending on seasonal conditions and safety advice, you may also be able to swim. Even if you simply sit with a coffee and take in the view, it feels like a destination in itself.

If you are in the mood for a walk, spend part of the afternoon on one of the nearby walking tracks for elevated views over the falls and surrounding rainforest. It is a beautiful place to slow down and share the day, which makes it especially well suited to couples after a more relaxed road trip rather than a checklist of attractions.

Where to stay in Wangi Falls

Wangi Falls Campground is the obvious and most rewarding overnight choice. It offers campervan-friendly sites along with useful facilities including toilets and hot showers, and staying here lets you enjoy the falls in the softer light of late afternoon and early morning. If sites are unavailable, a nearby fallback is to return toward Batchelor or continue to another approved campground within Litchfield, but Wangi is the standout option for atmosphere and convenience.

Day 3: Wangi Falls to Florence Falls

Distance: 65 kms
Travel time: ~1.5 hours

Day three is all about swimming, picnicking, and enjoying some of the most loved water-based stops in the park. The drive is short, which is exactly the point. This part of the Litchfield road trip is best experienced slowly, with time for a long morning, spontaneous swims, and afternoons that do not feel overplanned.

Where to stop between Wangi Falls and Florence Falls

Begin with Tolmer Falls, a spectacular stop that is easy to access by sealed road. A short walk leads to lookout platforms where you can gaze across the deep gorge and admire the two-tiered waterfall dropping into the plunge pool below. If you feel like stretching your legs a little more, the longer loop walk offers a broader sense of the surrounding landscape and its rocky, sunlit beauty.

From Tolmer, make your way to Buley Rockhole. This is one of the most enjoyable and sociable places in Litchfield National Park, with a series of shallow and deeper rock pools stepping down through the creek. It is ideal for a lazy midday stop. Bring lunch, find a smooth rock to sit on, and cool off in the water. The setting is relaxed and playful, yet still scenic enough to feel special.

Things to do in Florence Falls

Florence Falls is another must-see on any darwin to Litchfield national park adventure. The twin streams of water drop into a beautiful plunge pool that remains popular throughout the year, and the setting feels deeply tropical. Descending to the base of the falls adds a little effort to the experience, but it is worth it for the chance to swim and linger beneath one of the park’s most photogenic cascades.

Because the distance covered today is minimal, you can enjoy Florence Falls without rushing. Spend the afternoon alternating between the lookout, the swimming area, and the shaded picnic spaces nearby. If energy levels are still high, this is also a good day to add a short extra walk in the area and enjoy more of the creek and escarpment scenery.

Where to stay in Florence Falls

Florence Falls 2WD Campground is ideal for this itinerary. It is accessible for campervans, well equipped, and puts you close to one of the park’s most scenic areas. Amenities such as toilets and showers make it a comfortable overnight stop for couples travelling in an Apollo campervan. If Florence is booked, consider another approved nearby park campground that accommodates 2WD vehicles, but Florence is the best fit for this slower-paced itinerary.

Day 4: Florence Falls to Darwin

Distance: 115 kms
Travel time: ~2 hours

Rather than heading straight back, use your final morning in the park to enjoy one more walk before returning north to Darwin. This is a satisfying transition day, balancing a last taste of Litchfield’s rainforest and waterholes with a comfortable drive back to the city. It keeps this campervan road trip easy and unrushed, while leaving you with the feeling that you have fully experienced the park rather than skimmed across it.

Where to stop between Florence Falls and Darwin

If you are up for a moderate walk, start the day with the Greenant Creek Walk to Tjaetaba Falls. The track winds through monsoon forest and leads to a cool plunge pool setting that feels quieter and more secluded than some of the park’s headline stops. It is a lovely way to finish your time in Litchfield, especially for couples who want one more immersive nature experience before turning back toward Darwin.

From there, enjoy the drive north through the Top End landscape, perhaps pausing for a final scenic break or picnic lunch. Once you reach Darwin, a stop at George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens works beautifully if you did not visit on day one. After a few days of escarpments, waterfalls, and woodland, the gardens offer a softer urban green space in which to decompress.

Things to do in Darwin

Darwin has an easy tropical energy that makes it a pleasant final base for this northern territory top end itinerary. Spend the afternoon wandering the waterfront, enjoying a sunset by the harbour, or seeking out local galleries and cultural spaces that reflect the city’s strong connection to Aboriginal art and northern Australian life. After several days in nature, Darwin brings a different but complementary side of the Top End, mixing tropical atmosphere with history and creative culture.

Where to stay in Darwin

Discovery Parks Darwin is a convenient and comfortable place to park the campervan for the night, with powered sites and solid facilities. Another suitable option is the Darwin FreeSpirit Resort, which also offers campervan-friendly sites and makes a good overnight stop before returning your vehicle to Apollo.

Day 5: Darwin

Distance: ~20 kms
Travel time: ~1 hour

Your final day is intentionally light. After a few days of waterfalls, swims, and scenic drives, Darwin is the place to linger over breakfast, revisit a favourite spot, and round out the trip with some local culture. Because this itinerary is designed as a slower-paced long weekend style escape, the last day gives you breathing room rather than trying to squeeze in one more major drive.

Where to stop in Darwin

Spend your morning exploring one or two of Darwin’s cultural highlights at a relaxed pace. This could mean browsing art spaces, visiting a museum, or simply walking through the city and soaking up its tropical character. If your visit lines up with local markets, they can be a great place to experience the flavours and creative energy of the city before your trip wraps up. A waterfront stroll or another visit to the botanic gardens also fits nicely if you want to keep the day unhurried.

Things to do in Darwin

Darwin is a fitting bookend to this Litchfield national park getaway because it brings together many of the themes of the trip: nature, history, and culture. Enjoy one final waterside stroll, a leisurely lunch, or some time in the shade before preparing for your campervan return. It is an easy-going finale that suits the spirit of this road trip from start to finish.

Where to stay in Darwin

If you are not returning the campervan until the following morning, stay another night at Discovery Parks Darwin or Darwin FreeSpirit Resort. Both offer practical campervan facilities and let you end the journey without any last-minute rush. If your booking timing aligns, you can simply return your Apollo campervan to the Darwin branch and finish the trip there.
