What to do on your Queenstown campervan road trip?

There are few places in the world that are quite as spectacular as Queenstown. Situated on the edge of the crystal clear Lake Wakatipu and surrounded by the majestic Southern Alps, Queenstown is known for its four distinct seasons, natural scenery and thrilling attractions. From the moment you arrive in your campervan, you’ll see just why Queenstown is New Zealand’s leading visitor destination.

Discover the ultimate adventure

Queenstown has forged an enduring reputation as the adventure capital of the world with more than 200 different adrenaline-pumping activities on offer. Experience some of Aotearoa's most beautiful scenery in thrilling style with skydiving, river surfing, ziplining, white water rafting, and mountain biking – just to name a few!

Queentown’s dramatic alpine ranges are perfect for jet boating and bungee jumping – both of which were pioneered in New Zealand. The iconic Shotover Jet provides you with a world-class jet boating experience as you weave in and out of canyons at breathtaking speed while your pilot pulls 360 degree “jet spins” to keep you on the edge of your seat! Kawarau Bungy Centre is home to the world's first ever bungee jump. Plummet straight down so close to the river below that you can reach out and touch it for the ultimate adrenaline rush.

Winter is all about skiing and snowboarding with four excellent ski fields in the Queenstown area. The closest is Coronet Peak, which has been the premier winter playground since 1947 when the first rope lift in New Zealand was installed there. Queenstown's local ski area offers epic views over the Wakatipu basin while the huge variety of mountain terrain caters for all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Coronet Peak is also home to the night ski for a unique snow sports experience.

Relax with serene cultural delights

If thrill seeking isn’t your style, there is still so much to experience in Queenstown. Take a stroll through the beautiful and tranquil Queenstown Gardens, relax aboard a scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu, or enjoy dinner at the top of the Skyline Gondola with a bird's eye view of Queenstown's unique surroundings. After all that sightseeing, you’ll have earned a soak in the Onsen Hot Pools. Heal your body and mind with the soothing benefits of pure water and panoramic views of the Shotover River.

Queenstown is celebrated for its delicious food, spectacular wines, and vibrant nightlife. The city’s restaurants offer a gastronomic adventure with a wide range of cuisines using the freshest local produce. Whether you’re looking for a casual meal after a day of exploring or a fine dining restaurant, you’ll find something to satisfy every taste and every mood in New Zealand’s ultimate foodie destination.

Explore the stunning South Island

The fun and adventure doesn’t stop at Queenstown with plenty of nearby tours and day trips featuring gorgeous landscapes, calm blue waters and walking trails to explore. Embark on the scenic drive to Glenorchy before visiting the Kiwi Bird Life Park where you can meet New Zealand's beloved animals up close! During the warmer months, travel through the Gibbston Valley which is home to New Zealand’s most famous wine regions. Known as the Valley of Vines, you can enjoy some of the world’s best Pinot Noir at over 75 boutique wineries along with perfectly paired cheeses.

Driving to the top of the Remarkables mountain range and taking the 40-minute hike up to the picturesque, snow-fed Lake Alta is also well worth the trip during summer. Enjoy a romantic picnic by the lake nestled amongst the rugged backdrop of the Remarkables and, if you are feeling brave, a refreshing dip in the icy green waters.

The South Island road trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound is considered one the most scenic drives in the world. Located on the Wild West Coast about a 4-hour drive from Queenstown, Milford Sound is an awe-inspiring destination with its rugged cliffs, snow-capped peaks, lush green rainforests and cascading waterfalls that dissolve into mist. You can experience this majestic scenery from helicopter flights, guided kayaking tours, or the popular Milford hiking track.

Whatever you want to do and whatever your style is, Queenstown will feed your imagination, fuel your passions and revitalise your spirit.

How to find the best campervan deals in New Zealand

Exploring New Zealand by campervan hire is one of the best ways to experience the country’s stunning landscapes and hidden gems. Whether you're planning a relaxed road trip or an action-packed adventure, travelling by camper or motorhome gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. In this guide, we’ll share insights on how to find the best deals on campervan hire, so you can make the most of your New Zealand road trip without breaking the bank. From budget-saving tips to securing the perfect camper, we’ve got you covered. But first…

How to choose the right campervan

When planning your New Zealand road trip, choosing the right campervan or motorhome can make all the difference. There are various options to suit different needs, from budget-friendly 2-berth vans to spacious motorhomes for families. Let’s explore the different types available and how to choose the best fit for your road trip.

Low-top 2-berth campervans

Perfect for solo travellers or couples seeking affordability with basic amenities, low-top 2-berth vans provide comfort without breaking the bank. These compact campers are easy to drive and offer essential features such as a lounge area that converts into a bed, basic kitchen facilities, and occasionally an onboard toilet.

Cheapa's 2-berth campervan offers a fully self-contained option, complete with a fixed toilet, shower, and heating. It’s ideal for couples wanting a cost-effective, self-contained vehicle.

Hi-top 2-3 berth campervans

A step up in size, these vans provide extra space and are great for solo travellers or couples who appreciate added comfort. Hi-top vans usually include a seating area that converts into a larger bed, kitchenette, and sometimes a small bathroom, making them a versatile option.

Perfect for budget-conscious travellers, Cheapa’s Hi-top 3 berth campervan offers all the essentials, including a generous double bed, fridge, gas stove, and microwave. Please note, although this campervan includes a porta potti, it is not self-contained and therefore not suitable for freedom camping.

Hi-top 4 berth campervans

Ideal for families or small groups, 4-berth campers provide more space and convenience. They usually come equipped with a kitchen and dining area, and seating that converts into beds.

Cheapa’s Hi-top 4-berth Endeavour campervan is an economical option for families, offering a spacious interior and kitchen facilities, making it easy to prepare meals on the go. It’s the smallest 4-berth camper suitable for family touring. Please note, although this campervan features a porta potti, it is not self-contained and therefore not suitable for freedom camping.

4-5 berth motorhomes

For families or groups who want more space, motorhomes are the best option. Motorhomes typically come with full kitchen facilities, bathroom amenities, and plenty of storage space. They’re ideal for longer New Zealand road trips where comfort is key.

Cheapa offers a 4-berth motorhome and a 6-berth motorhome, both equipped with dining areas, a shower, fixed toilet, and ample sleeping space. These vehicles are excellent for families or groups wanting a home-like experience on the road.

Booking tips: how to maximise your savings

If you’re looking to get the most out of your campervan hire while saving money, here are some smart booking tips to help you stretch your travel budget further.

Earn Qantas points

By booking your camper van hire through Cheapa Campas, you can earn Qantas Points with every eligible booking. This means you can save on future travel while enjoying your current New Zealand road trip.

Book early

The earlier you book, the better the rates. Campervan hire prices tend to increase as availability decreases, so locking in your booking early can help secure the best deals. Plus, you’ll have a wider range of vehicles to choose from, ensuring you get exactly what you need for your trip.

Consider off-peak travel

Travelling during off-peak seasons is a great way to save money. Not only are campervan hire costs often lower, but you’ll also find less crowded destinations and special offers tailored to off-peak travellers. If your schedule is flexible, this can be one of the most effective ways to cut costs while still enjoying a fantastic New Zealand itinerary.

Bundle and save

Cheapa Campas offers opportunities to save even more by bundling your campervan hire with additional services such as insurance, camping gear, or extra equipment like GPS systems. By booking these together, you can often access discounted rates, making it more affordable to get everything you need for your New Zealand road trip.

Save even more with responsible freedom camping

A fantastic way to save money while travelling is by taking advantage of New Zealand’s responsible freedom camping sites. These are designated areas where you can camp for free, provided you meet certain rules and regulations.

Responsible freedom camping rules and regulations

In New Zealand, responsible freedom camping is only permitted if you're travelling in a certified self-contained vehicle. This means your campervan or motorhome must be equipped with onboard facilities, including a fixed toilet, freshwater storage, and wastewater storage. Vehicles that meet these requirements will display a certification sticker, allowing you to camp in approved areas across the country.

Choosing the right self-contained camper

Cheapa Campas makes freedom camping easy and affordable with a range of self-contained campers. These vehicles are fully equipped with a fixed toilet, shower, and waste storage, meaning you can enjoy responsible freedom camping without worrying about finding public facilities. However, it’s important to note that some of Cheapa’s vans, such as the Hi-Top and Endeavour, are not fully self-contained as they feature a porta potti rather than a fixed toilet. Be sure to check your vehicle’s specifications when booking to ensure it meets the criteria for responsible freedom camping.

Additional tips for maximising savings while freedom camping

Freedom camping is an excellent way to stretch your budget while exploring New Zealand’s incredible landscapes. Follow these tips to make the most of your campervan hire experience and maximise your savings on the road.

Download the thl Roadtrip app

This handy app can help you find freedom camping spots around New Zealand. It also offers valuable information on fuel stops, amenities, and any road closures you might encounter. By having the thl Roadtrip app at your fingertips, you can plan your journey more efficiently, avoid unexpected surprises, and make the most of your time on the road. Download the app from the App Store or Google Play

Make your own meals

Cooking in your campervan is one of the easiest ways to save money. Most self-contained vehicles come with kitchen facilities, so stock up on fresh, affordable ingredients at local farmers' markets or supermarkets. Preparing meals yourself not only saves you money but also gives you the flexibility to enjoy your favourite foods anytime, anywhere!

Avoid fines

To avoid costly fines, always follow New Zealand’s freedom camping regulations. Make sure to park in designated freedom camping areas, and always follow the Leave No Trace principles. Illegal camping or leaving waste behind can lead to steep penalties, so it’s essential to stay aware of local rules.

Take advantage of free activities

New Zealand is known for its stunning landscapes, and many of the best experiences are free. Whether it’s hiking, exploring beaches, or visiting national parks, there’s no shortage of cost-free adventures to enjoy during your New Zealand road trip. Plan your days around these activities to make the most of your trip without overspending.
